Define Teaching

Please give me your definition of teaching, not the textbook definition! Also, please give me at least three reasons why you chose to be a teacher.

  1. Teaching can be defined in many ways but I think it really focuses on the objective of learning. A teacher specializes on certain subjects and helps students understand, apply, create, and explore those subjects until they have fully learned the information.
Reasons I want to be a teacher:
    1. Honestly, I was never very good at school and I was barely interested in many subjects. However, I felt confident, strong and happy in physical education or fitness. I wanted to become a teacher so that I could help someone like me enjoy the subject as much as I did.
    2. I love feeling like I am making a difference. I am only one person, and I am small, but if I can change one person's day, year, or school years, then I have accomplished that goal.
    3. I have always been physically active and within this major, I will stay physically active and hopefully bring others to join.

    1. Well said Marissa. I love the definition...apply, create, explore. If you stick to those objectives you will be a teacher that makes a difference in your students lives. I hope you enjoy the class.

  2. I think teaching is anything you do to help someone learn, as long as they actually learn something. I think something does have to be learned, even if it isn't the objective you set out for, otherwise, what have you taught?
It's a fairly simplistic definition, but so much learning happens outside of the classroom that you can't define the interaction between a student and teacher as the only type of teaching. You can be taught by family, friends, coworkers and even strangers.
Teaching is passing on knowledge, no matter what that knowledge might happen to be or who it came from.

    1. Is learning and the passing of knowledge the same thing?

  3. I think that teaching is passing on knoledge to students but not just things like facts. Passing on structures of thought and problem solving and encouraging students to expand upon and apply them are also important.
I want to be a teacher because I absolutly love history and think that the way most teachers teach it is boring. I want to inspire a love of history and learning in general in students by finding interesting ways to teach and apply lessons to their lives. Finaly I love the way that kids think and the level of creativity they have I want to help them learn to use it in an academic format or apply it to whatever they hope to do with there lives.

    1. Jes,
I like the application of knowledge as part of your definition. One of the most interesting teachers I had in college was a history professor, and I don't like history, at least until I took his class. He made it applicable and I enjoy today because of his class.

  4. My definition of teaching is anytime that you can help someone learn/understand something they did not already know or are having issues with. This can happen in any setting it does not just have to be in the class room. I also feel that a part of teaching is getting someone excited about what they are learning, having fun, and maybe interested in something that they were not before.
Reasons why I want to be a teacher
    1. I love working with kids and seeing the enjoyment they get out of learning something new.
    2. I also love just how happy kids are when they get to run around and just be kids in the class room. That is one of the reasons why I wanted to be a PE major. Children are being drilled in the academics area, I want to make sure they have a place to go and be a kid.
    3. I love learning new things and being able to share them with others.

    1. I agree, kids need to have fun. I see it where I teach; by the time they get to my class, music, they are ready to do something besides be lectured at. Last week, I took them outside and played kickball! Not much music got rehearsed, but it was one of the best classes of the year. I got to see them just kick back and be kids. I have some really great kids!

  5. Teaching for me is like being an artist or a builder. We are the architects of our new generation! With patience teachers helped to open the intrinsic avenues of the brain’s child and little by little we keep working together until we helped to create the new scientific, the plumber, and the secretary and so on. Sounds idealistic, but this is the way I see myself as a teacher! And this is one of the reasons I decided (back in the 70’s) to become a teacher. Also, I love teaching because it keeps me dynamic! Although, I always said joking that HS students are like mosquitos, draining all your blood and sucking your energy during ten months and for that reason I cannot imagine a teacher without the summer vacations. But usually, at the same time I cannot wait until I meet again all the bunch of kids making noises like bees and sucking again my energy. And finally my greatest satisfaction as a teacher is to help students in fulfilling their future goals.

  6. I think teaching can be defined a million different ways. But for me, teaching is an art- there are always different styles and opinions. You know you've taught someone when they learn something or are inspired or even made them think about something differently. Teaching is something no one can be perfect at--it's a profession in which you are always learning and always growing.
I want to be a teacher because...
    1. I want to make a difference in a child's life
    2. I want to spread my beliefs on how important diversity and different cultures are- I want kids to be aware that there is so much in this world and it's beautiful how different every place and type of people on this planet are
3.I really love helping people and by being a teacher I know I will be able to help kids whether it be with something simple like a homework assignment or something as big as reaching their dreams.

  7. To me teaching can be done by anyone. Anytime one person introduces something new or helps another better their understanding about something, that is teaching. I feel like we can learn as much from our students as they can from us. Being a teacher by profession means that one works at their craft to improve their effectiveness. Teachers try to relay a message that will stick, and if their message gets lost, as it will undoubtedly sometimes do, a successful teacher reflects and adapts.
    I want to teach because,
    1. I think I can be an effective motivator. Too many kids with potential get lost in the shuffle because they didn't have someone challenging them and actually caring about their success.
    2. I love the excitement. Unlike other possible work environments, schools are dynamic places. No two students are the same, and no two school days are the same.
    3. I believe there is no better or more important way to make a living.

  8. I would define teaching as presenting and explaining new ideas or subject matter to a person or group of people. Teaching can be done formally inside a classroom or informally in everyday life. Teachers are not only professional people but also common people who share ideas. After introducing subject matter, teachers motivate pupils to explore further in the content area.
I want to be a teacher because:

    1. I want to help young people become more open minded and worldly. Not all children are exposed to languages other than their own and it is important to become aware of other languages and study them. Learning a new language and culture will also help a child develop an open minded attitude in all other aspects of life.
    2. I want to teach children about a complex yet fascinating language and help them to gain appreciation for their own language and other people's. I hope to motivate them to continue to study languages.
    3. I want to experience both difficult and cooperative students. I want to have a positive impact on high school students who are developing into adults so that they will share the positive outlook throughout their lives.

  9. Teaching means different thing to different people. I believe that teaching is when you are able to help someone learn whether it's new material or helping them understand something better than they did before your help. As a teacher you are able to be a positive influence in the life of a child both in the classroom and as an adult in general. As an educator you have the ability to be able to help students advance academically and be successful learners and educated members of society.

I want to be a teacher because:

    1. I knew no matter what I was going to do for a career, I wanted to work with children. I want to make a difference in the lives of children and help them grow and learn.
    2. I want to teach history because I think that taught in a certain way it doesn't have to feel like a chore but instead can be fun and interesting. I want to change the perception that history is "boring."
    3. I wanted a challenging profession that presented new scenarios on a daily basis. I believe that as much as teachers can teach children, children can also teach their teachers and that there are important lessons to be learned by working with children.

  10. I think teaching can have a different meaning depending on who you are asking. To me, teaching is giving students knowledge and support to pursue their own goals and the confidence to make they believe they can achieve them. It's giving your students the tools they need to succeed. It is about more than standing in front of your classroom reading off information. Teachers have the opportunity to really make an impact on the lives of their students by taking a general interest in the success and happiness of their students.

i want to be a teacher because-
    1. I have always known that teaching was the career for me. I thoroughly enjoy working with children and couldn't imagine doing any other kind of work.
    2. It's always touching watching a child grow and succeed. I hope through my career as a teacher I'll be able to help my students grow and succeed as humans, and I can only hope that I will get to be a part of their achievement.
    3. As a Spanish major, I have a significant interest in other languages. In my opinion, learning about other languages and cultures can be nothing but beneficial to a child. I hope, with my teaching, I will be able to open the eyes of my future students and instill a love for learning new languages in them.

  11. The definition of teaching according to the dictionary of Deirdre: Teaching is leading a group by motivating and encouraging them to learn new skills, concepts, and knowledge that they can apply in the real world as they become more responsible and mature adults.

I want to become a teacher because:
    1. I love working with children and feel that I am learning as much form them as they are learning from me.

    2. I can improve a child's life in so many ways through physical activity. A person's health is one of the most important things and I can teach my students how to live a healthier and more active life.

    3. I want to teach elementary P.E. because every young kid loves physical education! They do not realize that while they are smiling and laughing they are growing and learning some of the most valuable skills they will need in life: teamwork, responsibility, hard work, character and other important lessons!
